Corruption and inequality, of course, simply hasten the inevitable as humanity increasingly exceeds any sort of viable ecological footprint. Of course poorer nations are hit first, but we're all in the gun.
We're living in fantasyland. The economy is an energy system; money is nothing more than a rather inaccurate proxy for access to energy or the resources that energy can unlock. Global heating, ocean acidification, urban sprawl onto good arable land, deforestation, critical mineral limitations and decreasing EROI.... These things take no account of human 'rights'.
And yet STILL we persist in believing in perpetual motion. STILL we believe we can decouple GDP growth from energy use. The only way to ensure our kids have a future is for wealthier nations to live much more simply. A number of analyses suggest we need to shift not just to a low carbon economy but a much lower energy economy. How about halving our energy use?
