I have a book written by a British officer who served with a Gurkha regiment on the borders of Waziristan before WW2. They were tasked with preventing incursions into the Punjab by hill tribesmen bent on violence - the predecessors of the taliban. He totally respected their courage, tactical ability, and determination. He also commented in their love of fighting for its own sake, and reported that after one campaign some of them wanted to be awarded the campaign medal - after all, there would have been no fighting without them as opposition, would there? I predict that now they are in charge, they won't know what to do - and will start picking fights with each other or neighbouring countries. Fighting is their raison d'etre. Only when they weary of that will Afghanistan know any peace, or have any chance at development.
